How to Calculate Poker Equity in Texas Hold’em

Last updated: January 2026 • Reviewed for mathematical accuracy

Poker equity is your percentage chance of winning a hand at showdown. In Texas Hold’em, equity represents how often your hand will win against an opponent’s range if the remaining cards were dealt randomly.

Basic Equity Formula

At its simplest level:

Equity = (Number of Winning Outcomes) / (Total Possible Outcomes)

For example, if your hand wins 40% of the time against your opponent’s range, your equity is 40%.

Preflop Equity Example

If you hold A♠ K♠ against a single opponent holding Q♥ Q♦, your equity preflop is approximately 43%.

That means if you ran the hand 1,000 times, AK would win about 430 of them.

Flop & Turn Equity

As community cards are revealed, equity changes dynamically.

If you flop a flush draw, your equity may jump significantly depending on how many outs you have.

What Are “Outs”?

Outs are unseen cards that improve your hand.

Example: You have 4 cards to a flush. There are 9 remaining cards of that suit in the deck. You have 9 outs.

Rule of 2 and 4

Players often estimate equity quickly using:

This gives a rough percentage of hitting your draw.

Monte Carlo Simulations

Modern equity calculators use Monte Carlo simulations to randomly deal remaining cards thousands of times to estimate true win percentages.
